This list of the Top 10 Arab Films of All Time includes some of the most acclaimed works from the Middle East. This list includes such films as You Will Die at Twenty, Youssef, Man of Ashes, Chronicle of the Years of Fire, and Is Sumyati Going to Hell?, as well as short films from Saudi Arabia. If you are in the market for a new movie to watch, this list is for you.
You Will Die at Twenty
You Will Die at Twenty is an adaptation of a short story by Hammour Ziada that follows the life of a young boy called Muzamil, who is born into a village ruled by Sufi beliefs. A holy man predicts that Muzamil will die before he turns twenty, a fate that he dreads. His overprotective mother tries to keep the boy alive, but eventually she reaches a breaking point.Although hardly a masterpiece, "You Will Die at Twenty" is still an emotional journey, and a solid first feature. The cinematography, by Sebastien Goepfert, is particularly beautiful. It captures beautiful yet desolate scenes with a stark contrast of color and shadow. The score, by Hamine Bouhafa, is dark and spiritual.
Youssef
Youssef is a political film centered on contemporary Egypt and its people. The film follows Yehia, a heart surgery patient, who reflects on her life while in the operating room. The film's central metaphor is that the heart chamber serves as a courtroom where she is being tried for mistakes made inside the heart. The film stars Nour El Sherif and Magda El-Khatib. The film won numerous awards from the Cairo International Film Festival, and it was also entered into the Dubai International Film Festival.Youssef was the first film to win the Palme d'Or for best foreign language film at the Cannes Film Festival in 1993. It was the first homegrown film to deal with the Algerian War of Independence, and it was controversial and criticized by the French Right. Despite this controversy, Youssef remains one of the best Arab films. And in this age of terrorism, it's good to remember that this film isn't just about the Arab world.
Man of Ashes
The upcoming Dubai International Film Festival will feature some of the best Arab films in the history of the cinema. The Best Foreign Language Film award will be announced in January. The film based on a 1963 novel by Ghassan Kanafani, "Men in the Sun," tells the story of three Palestinian refugees who flee the country to escape their oppressors. The film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, making it the first Arab film to win the prize.Another Arab film that made headlines was Man of Ashes, a film directed by Nouri Bouzid in the 1980s. This film dealt with the oppression of homosexuality and sexual harassment. The story of a young carpentry apprentice whose father has raped him was controversial at the time. The film also addressed the relationship between gender and political oppression in the Arab world.
Chronicle of the Years of Fire
The Algerian director Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina produced one of the best Arab films ever made, and it was well received when it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Although it looks like Hollywood spectacle, it documents the struggle for independence in a way that is deeply moving. Many Arab countries have banned the film, but it is nonetheless a classic. Here are three reasons why this film deserves a place in the Top 10 Arab films of all time.First, it's a love story between a peasant girl and an engineering engineer. The plot revolves around the fate of the young engineer and his beautiful wife, and is a classic example of Egyptian classical cinema. The film is beautifully shot, and the performances of the two leads are genuinely beautiful. Its main cast is made up of talented young actors and actresses, including Faten Hamama, who gives one of the most moving performances of his career.Source : مسلسلات وبرامج
